This article explains the functions of different lines on the tennis court.


The center line divides the court into Deuce sides and Ad sides. In a match, the player must serve every other serve from the deuce side.

The singles lines divide the playing area used in singles matches. Compared to the doubles court the singles court is 2,74 meters (9 feet) more narrow.
In a singles match, players must serve from between the singles lines.

The Double lines or Tram lines divide the doubles playing area. In a doubles match the full borders of the court are used including the outer sideline. The doubles playing area is 2,74 meters (9 feet) wider.
In a doubles match players can serve between the center line and the outer sideline.

The Service Boxes mark where the ball must land on the serve.
Note! The lines surrounding the service box are also part of the service box so if the ball lands on the line the serve is in.
