Wilson Tennis Grip Models Explained (2025)

This article explains the different Wilson tennis grip models, including both overgrips and replacement grips.

Ovegrips

Overgrips are thin grips designed to be wrapped over the base grip. They should typically be replaced every 8 hours of play, though this can vary depending on the type of overgrip and playing conditions. A useful visual cue is the color change. Light-colored overgrips turning dark, or dark grips fading, usually indicates it’s time for a replacement.

Using a worn-out overgrip reduces friction, which can cause the racket to slip or twist, especially in sweaty or humid conditions.

It is generally recommended to always use an overgrip on top of the base grip, as it is much easier to replace. Keep in mind that adding an overgrip will slightly increase the overall grip size. Some players take advantage of this by buying a racket with a smaller grip size, then using one or more overgrips to reach their preferred thickness.

Wilson Pro Overgrip Perforated

Wilson Pro Perforated Overgrip package

Price: $8.00

Length: Good

Durability: Average (6-8 hours)

Tackiness: Medium-High

Available colors: White, Green, and Pink

The Wilson Perforated Overgrip is the perforated version of the basic Pro Overgrip model. It features the same ultra-thin and high-stretch material, but with small holes punched throughout it—hence the “perforated” name. Thanks to this design, it offers better moisture absorption and dries faster. I’ve used this grip for many years and can personally vouch for its performance.

The perforated texture also increases tackiness, especially during long playing sessions, but it slightly reduces overall durability. In my experience, the grip lasts around 6 to 8 hours of play, though after the first session, the edges can start to feel a bit sharper.

Because the Wilson Perforated Overgrip stretches well, it’s easy to install on a variety of rackets and grip sizes. However, care should be taken not to overstretch it, as the small holes along the edges can tear if pulled too tightly.

Wilson Pro Overgrip Comfort

Price: $8.00

Length: Good

Durability: Above average (10 hours)

Tackiness: Medium

Available colors: White, Pink/White/Green, Pink, Yellow, Green, Burn Orange, Orange, Silver

Wilson Comfort is a super-thin, easy-to-install overgrip with good stretch. It is medium-tacky, meaning that it is not too tacky but still offers good grip in prolonged playing sessions. The grip’s bottom end is precut, and it has a glue strip, which makes it really easy to install compared to more classical overgrips that haven’t been precut and glued.

Since the Wilson Comfort overgrip has a good stretch, it fits many racket grip sizes. For a larger grip size the comfort grip and be stretched lightly more so it covers the whole racket handle.

In my experience, the durability of the Comfort grip is above average and lasts about 8-9 hours.

Wilson Pro Overgrip Sensation

Wilson Pro Feel Overgrip package

Price: $8.00

Length: Below average

Durability: Not yet tested

Tackiness: Medium-Low

Available colors: Black

Wilson Sensation is a thin overgrip with low stretch. Since the grip is thinner than the Comfort model, it provides a better racket feel and feedback for demanding players. The Sensation grip has a similar surface to the Comfort grip, so it’s medium-low-tacky and offers average grip in prolonged playing sessions. Its bottom end is also precut, and it has a glue strip, which makes it really easy to install compared to more classical grips that haven’t been precut and glued.

Since the Wilson Sensation is an ultra-thin grip, it doesn’t offer as good stretching functions as the Comfort, making it more suitable for smaller grip sizes and rackets. When stretched too much, the grip’s surface can feel slippery or uncomfortable.

Wilson Advantage Overgrip

Tackiness: Medium

Available colors: Black

The Wilson Advantage Overgrip focuses more on moisture absorption compared to other models in the series. While it shares many features with the Wilson Pro Overgrip, it is specifically designed for superior moisture control.

Wilson Ultra Wrap Overgrip

Length: Good

Tackiness: Medium

Available colors: Black

The Wilson Ultra Wrap grip is a more affordable overgrip option. It shares the same characteristics as the Feel overgrip.

Replacement Grips

Replacement grips are thicker grips for replacing the base grip. They function similarly to overgrips but are much harder to install since they are stiffer and need to be stretched in order to avoid creases. This is why it is more convenient to use overgrips since they are much easier to replace and don’t require as much skill. However, some players prefer to play with only base/replacement grips especially leather ones.

There are also special types of replacement grips that offer features that overgrips don’t. For example, one of the most popular tricks among more experienced players is to replace the base grip with a leather replacement grip. Because leather is heavier than the basic synthetic grip material, it adds more weight to the handle, changing and improving the racket’s playability.

Leather Replacement Grips

Leather replacement grips are more traditional, premium grips intended for experienced players. Because of their high-quality material, they are heavier and more durable than synthetic grips. They also have a firmer feel, which makes the edges of the handle more noticeable and gives it a slightly more rectangular shape.

Leather grips have a smooth surface, which results in lower tackiness compared to synthetic overgrips.

Length: Good

Durability: Not yet tested

The Wilson RF Leather Replacement Grip is the most premium leather grip in the lineup, made from genuine calfskin.
